September 5-7, 2009
On Saturday, Sept 5,2009 members of the bad pennies met in Chicago bright and early at the baggage claim. After a quick trip to pick up a Van we were off. The members on the adventure were:
Andrew and Barbara Rose - Francine York - Robert Lumbert - Matt Pernick
First stop was at Midewin National TallGrass Prairie. True to its name it was a 11k walk through a tallgrass prairie. We were a little perturbed at the beginning to realize most of the other people there were hunters. However we got to walk the trail and see munitions bunkers that are also there.
After a quick lunch we went to Oak Park - which had the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright and over 30 other homes he had built. It was a beautiful 10k walk through a very upscale residential neighborhood. There were many very interesting houses besides the FLW homes.
We checked into La quinta in downtown Chicago and then walked to the Italian Village for dinner. It is the oldest italian restaurant still in business in Chicago.
Sunday dawned and after an early breakfast we went to the start point for two Chicago walks. One was the 11k GoldCoast walk. The other was the 11k Lakefront walk. Temperature was upper 70's and no rain for the whole trip. The walks went by the haute couture shops of Michigan Avenue and along the lakefront by the aquarium and the Planetarium.
Beautiful day and beautiful walks. We then went briefly to the hotel before heading out for our architectural cruise and fireworks. Dinner was "catch it if you can. The cruise was great. Chicago is a beautiful city at night, and the fireworks were the last of the season.
Monday we checked out and went to the village of Frankfort for a walk on a greenway. The village was having a fair and parking proved a bit tricky - but we all finished a 10k and some even had lunch at the fair. Then off to Evanston and our last walk. This 10k had everything - lakefront, lovely residential neighborhoods, northwestern university, and a bahai temple.
